Subbrands
Dr. Christoph Hantel, Director of vh Ulm since 2019
The vh Ulm clearly stands out from other educational institutions through its concept of sub-brands or academies. The idea is simple and effective: many people feel more at ease in groups tailored to age, gender, or shared interests. This creates a familiar, safe environment that makes learning easier. Examples include the Women’s Academy (since 1986), the Men’s Academy (since 2011), the Children’s University (since 2021), the Health Academy and the Yoga Centre (since 2000), the kontiki Children’s Art School (since 1987), and the Academy for Civic Engagement (since 2005). Each academy has its own character, evident in its atmosphere, tone of interaction, and working style. This structure represents quality. Lecturers and participants are proud to belong. I often sense it intuitively myself: as soon as I enter a room, I know which academy it belongs to, who teaches there, and what the tone of interaction is like. This distinctive atmosphere and shared understanding—they speak a language of their own. That is precisely what fascinates me about this concept, time and again. The academies tackle complex subjects in a structured and holistic manner—from building competencies to practical qualification. They link individual abilities with subject-specific content. Personally, I find it fascinating to see how vh Ulm has successfully lived this principle for decades. It is truly something special.
The vh Ulm is one of the ten largest adult education centres in Baden-Württemberg and offers the only cross-state programme serving a city spanning both Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Its centre is the EinsteinHaus at Kornhausplatz, built in 1968 in the style of Ulm functionalism, with 27 seminar, lecture, and training rooms for conferences, as well as spacious foyers for groups, exhibitions, and events—all modern and fully multimedia-equipped. Each year, around 30,000 participants attend courses and seminars, and about 25,000 attend lectures and cultural events. With an average of ten visits per participant, this amounts to 250,000 visits, 75,000 teaching hours, and more than 3,500 events. Several sub-brands have complemented the programme since the 1970s: the Evening School for Adults, the Women’s Academy for building competencies among women, the kontiki Children’s Art School with creative courses for children and young people, the Health Academy and Yoga Centre focusing on wellness and yoga, the Academy for Civic Engagement offering seminars for volunteers, the Men’s Academy for personal development, as well as the Aicher-Scholl College and the Children’s University. Additional learning locations include a dance studio with two large halls in Ulm and other vh learning centres in Langenau, Neu-Ulm, Blaustein, Erbach, and other member municipalities.
»I am amazed at how smoothly vh Ulm has been running for decades.«
