Einer der ältesten Salsa-Tanzstile, bekannt aus der kubanischen Hauptstadt Havanna, ist die afrocubanische Salsa stark geprägt von westafrikanischen traditionellen Tänzen der ehemaligen Sklaven aus Westafrika. Die Musik wurde zunächst auf afrikanischen Trommeln und Holzblasinstrumenten gespielt. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war afrocubanische Salsa erst als Latino-Jazz bekannt, später wurde es Salsa genannt.
